Kendriya Vidyalayas or the KVs

The Kendriya Vidyalayas or KVs as they are often called, have some of the best CBSE schools. These schools sure can give the other hi-fi CBSE schools in the city a run for their money.

The schools are managed by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and have over 1070 schools under them. The Schools come under the purview of the HR Ministry and all schools are affiliated to CBSE. There are 4 KVs in Moscow, Tehran, Kuwait and Kathmandu. Each KV has a managing committee with headquarters at Delhi.

There are KVs in the civil sector, defence or Public sector or Institutes of Higher Learning. All the KVs in Bangalore have classes till 12th and all of them are more than 30 years old. The oldest is the ASC center started in 1963. Malleswaram branch is one of the best KVs in Bangalore having a good academic track record.

More Kendriya Vidyalayas are being planned and all of them are to be computer aided schools. You can check out the websites for detailed information and transparency too!

Admissions:
Admissions to the Kendriya Vidyalayas are the same all over and if you are into any of these categories it has been prioritised and there are lots more criteria. If you fit any of these then you look for additional guidelines in any of the KV website or www.kvsangathan.nic.in. (These schools don't look at parents salary or whether top rankers, yet they churn out good quality students academically and sports wise). There are quotas for sports and only girl child criteria also.

The basic guidelines are in order of priority:
(A) Kendriya Vidyalayas under Civil/Defence Sector :
  1. Children of transferable central government employees including ex-servicemen.
  2. Children of non-transferable Central Government employees including ex-servicemen.
  3. Children of transferable and non-transferable employees of Autonomous Bodies/Public Sector Undertaking/Institute of Higher Learning of the Government of India.
  4. Children of transferable State Government employees.
  5. Children of non-transferable employees of State Government.
  6. Children of transferable and non-transferable employees of Autonomous Bodies/ Public Sector Undertakings/Institute of Higher Learning of the State Governments.
  7. Children from any other category.

 (B) Kendriya Vidyalayas under Public Sector Undertakings /  Institutes of Higher Learning
  1. Children and grand children of employees of the Public Sector Undertakings/Institutes of Higher Learning which finance the concerned Kendriya Vidyalayas fully.
  2. The priorities given for Kendriya Vidyalayas under Civil/Defence sector will follow in the same sequence, thereafter.

What is National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) ?

Many kids of today are multi-faceted and wish to pursue their dreams in sports or arts or either wish to be home-schooled. Whatever the reason, they need not miss out on their academic pursuits. It is in this regard I thought of writing about NIOS. Children can complete 10th and 12th through NIOS and they are equally qualified to take up College degrees.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) previously the National Open School (NOS) is a boon for home schooled kids, slow learners, school-drop outs, children who pursue other fields and would like to join the main stream. The NIOS was established by the Ministry of Human Resources. NOS provides the following education and examination:

Open Basic Education (OBE): for children below 14 years and adults above 14 years
Level A: Equal to class 3
Level B: Equal to class 5
Level C: Equal to class 8

Secondary : Equal to 10th
Senior Secondary: Equal to 12th
Vocational Courses: Certificate and Diploma
Life-Enrichment courses: Enhancement courses like Yoga, Music

Students can join NIOS on-line or through the regional centers. They can get access to on-line course material and can apply for the exams on-line. The exams are conducted twice a year. The exams can be taken On-Demand, i.e. they can take up exams when they are ready and can take up in any of the regional centers.

There are study centers in many regions for students for coaching or group studies. NIOS has email, Telephone, Web or SMS driven Learner Information System. You can get prospectus, syllabus, candidature, study material requisition, list of Universities taking in NOS students etc. from the web site of NOS.
